As mentioned on a previous thread there was a Fell Club meeting in Silverdale a couple of weeks ago.
Five people turned up and I think that's not a bad turnout for an early April meeting!
We had it cold and the wetaher threw a lot at us, hailstones, rain and wind etc, but we got through it. I managed to have a ride home and back on the Saturday morning as my stove, my headtorch and my bike light all went Belly up on the Friday night! We retired to a local hostelry on the Friday and Saturday evenings where I was happy to find they served a good coffee!
On to the point of this post..... The Site!
It was in a good location for riding and walking countryside and it was the first weekend it has been open in 2006. The main trade is the two small fields of caravans that pay to set up their air conditioned, microwave equipped homes from home. The Bottom field was for tents and it is quite a decent size.
Problem number one was that it was muddy as hell! I don't know if it is from bad drainage or just lack of maintenance through the year but I had to give the tent a real clean up when I got home.
Problem/Whinge number two... The toilets and (Singular) shower were all in the caravan field, a good 150 yards from the tents. There was NO LIGHTING at all on the lower part of the site and to get to the toilet block you had to cross the field, try to find a narrow gate in an old stone wall and thne pick your way through rocks and trees up a mud track to get there. A little bit of a location light would have been helpful.
Talking to people since then that know the site I find that it is used in the summer mainly by groups of "Yoof" with Boom Boxes all trying to party the night away.
I would use the site again only if I knew there was no alternative nearby but I could have wild camped in a better location.
The place is called Gibraltar Farm, Silverdale and is about 12 miles North and west of Lancaster.
Appreciate anybody else giving news and views an sites suitable for cyclists.
