Two or three weeks. Working on the principle that I wouldn't be able to access bike shops. Riding a 26" wheel tourer with tent and loaded for bear. What tools, spares and repair gear should I take?

Take a first aid kit in case you do what I did at York and try to remove your thumb with your penknife at 6 in the morning.

Would really appreciate thoughts on the original question though.

OK you want a serious reply, and why not? 2 spare tubes, puncture outfit, 1 'boot' (6" strip of worn tyre with wire removed, to tuck under cover in case of slashed tyre), 1 brake + 1 gear cable + any straddle cable, spare Allen bolts for carriers/bottle cages, tools for all minor repairs, including 6mm stem head key and 8mm for cranks if not bolt fittings, spoke key, electrical tape (for punctures or tying on), some plastic ties (ditto), spare brake blocks, pump. That should do it. If the bike is in good nick, you won't require any of that! My End-to-end in 1993 had 1 puncture as only mishap!

Trouble is that when I look at lists like that I agree with it all in principle. Then I try to pack and realise that with clothes, camping gear and cooking stuff I have four full panniers and can only just handle the weight! Would you take all that always?

I Manage to fit all my tools spares etc in the side pockets of my saddlebag. You may never need any of your tools or spares and think it unnecessary to take them all but on the other hand there is going to be a need at some point just as if you take a rain coat. what you take is very much a common sence thing if you are going for a days ride then you don't need as much however if you are embarking on a weeks touring you need to be prepared I have recently returned from a week in the welsh mountains and needed to break out the tool kit twice! if I hadn't taken it with me i would have had to find a town with cycle repair shop inconveniencing me greatly. The up shot of this is it is your call take what you feel appropriate the advise is hear but you don't have to use it. Regards. Gary.
