I have just spent a day cycling 55 mile of the mountains of Co Wicklow. I would highly recommend the area and cycle friendly people of Ireland and I'm planning to go back next year for a full tour. The flashing (of lights ) waving and general shouts of encouragement was a pleasant change from getting shouted and sworn at over here, even the Police beeped their horns and waved as I cycled past. I did cheat though as I was offered a lift from the bloke I brought the trike off up to the area. The down hill bit back into Dublin was fun though, and the ride into Dublin center on a Saturday afternoon was no problem either. Rich.

Rich..... What ferries and ports did you use? I am looking at somewhere I can ride all the way from home and have only come up with Fleetwood to Larne so far and that is in the North. I am based in Lancaster so Holyhead would be a difficult and probably pretty unpleasant route for me!

I used Irish Ferries from Holyhead £36 return on foot. You could use Norse Merchant ferries from Birkenhead to Dublin,It's only about 65 mile from you. It's a shame Norse ferries only do freight from Heysham. do you know any friendly lorry drivers going over to give you a lift ;D.

I'll look at the Birkenhead thing as I am sure I could get there in a day if the Ferry was at the right sort of time so I didnt need a place to stay overnight. Any idea how long the journey is, or if not, how long it took from Holyhead? Anybody want to give me grammar lessons

Irish ferries run from Holyhead so do Stenaline they take 3.5 hours unless you take the fast ferry which is about 1.5 hrs. P&O sail from Liverpool and take 8 hrs, 2 sailings, day or night. You could cycle down and get the night ferry over with a cabin and cycle away in the morning refreshed. Norse merchant sail from Birkenhead taking similar times as P&O. Rich.

Thanks Rich, Looks like the Liverpool one would be best. Need to find out the prices now and see how low I can keep it!

Just had a look at the Norse website and it looks quite good as Birkenhead to Dublin. Tried ringing them but all busy and I am in no mad rush for a couple of months now!

Norse has changed to www.norfolkline-ferries.co.uk/en/is-passenger/ and they seem pretty good on price etc. Now looking at mid October and thinking of going to Belfast and beyond. Edited to say............. "Bugger that! I can't afford the trip for a few months now so it looks like Next year!"
